Climate change and resilience
Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.
Improve and extend maintenance operations to council owned assets essential to civil defence.
Move towards providing hard shade cover for council-owned outdoor playgrounds as it could impact health.
Push out greenhouse gas emissions and earthquake works by another 30 to 40 years as more pressing issues require fixing first.
Continue civil defence preparedness ensuring TCDC is ready for the challenges of any future severe weather events or coastal threats.
Continue to support and strengthen the climate change strategy policy adopted by council on 5 August 2025.
Continue to support and strengthen the greenhouse gas emissions reductions plan adopted by council on 5 August 2025.
