The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including Two members from your area, and three members from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Improve transport alternatives in the ward with more bus stops and routes within 400m of more residents, recognising transport is the largest emitter.

    Increase public awareness and reduce fire risk areas in the Port Hills as wildfire risk increases with climate heating.

  • Continue flood protection and water quality protection works in the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote catchment including existing retention basins.

    Develop and deliver a plan for the Port Hills that tackles fire risk with native biodiversity.

    Empower local community civil defence teams such as Somerfield Community Emergency Response Team and Cashmere Residents Emergency Support Team.

  • Commit to a more resilient Port Hills through plantings that support erosion protection, reduce fire risk and maintain land to reduce fuel.

    Promote and establish community response teams for civil emergencies and disaster response when needed, recognising communities know community best.

    Support and input into community-led climate adaptation plans.

  • Deliver the Port Hills plan reducing fire risk on the hills, adding native plantings and limiting sediment migration at its source.

    Ensure every child can safely walk, bike or scooter to their nearest school by removing barriers and making societal changes.

    Continue support for the urban forest plan for the southern suburbs, progressively increasing tree coverage.
