Rangiora-Ashley Ward
The Waimakariri District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the Rangiora-Ashley ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Climate change and resilience

  • Commit to programmes that encourage residents to lower their environmental impact with more recycling and smarter use of resources.

    Establish a council vehicle policy to commit to and maintain a fleet that is fit for purpose and fully utilised to lower emissions.

    Support the use of electric and more fuel-efficient powered vehicles with further investment and partnership in local charging stations.

  • Maintain strong civil defence plans and community readiness.

    Prioritise resilient infrastructure to withstand floods, quakes and other disasters.

    Support cost-effective ways to cut emissions without extra burden on ratepayers.

  • Ensure all council buildings are up to earthquake strengthening codes and maintain a loan funding ceiling in case of any further major earthquake.

    Focus on council and staff practising resilience in waste management, vehicle expenses and all aspects to combat climate escalation.

    Maintain five teams of staff ready to mitigate damage in case of major rain events to limit flooding and damage to property and people.

  • Engage with and actively involve other groups who are standing by and ready to assist, eg Rangiora Community Patrol and NC Neighbourhood Support.

    Strengthen flood control and resilience infrastructure.

    Train and equip the civil defence team, including the many volunteers and community hubs, to effectively lead emergency responses.

  • Commit to growing resilience in communities by partnering effective organisations with the same values and goals.

    Continue to support the council's resiliency team's work responding to severe weather events and building more resilient infrastructure.

    Promote alternative forms of transport where sensible to reduce congestion on the arterial roads.

  • Investigate and publicise easy to understand local guidelines and hacks for civil defence planning that residents, businesses and others can use.

    Promote riverbed environment and riverbed environmental protections alongside balanced recreation use.

    Support the concept of evolving practical top ten local environmental issues and practical mitigations for residents and businesses.
