The Waimakariri District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the Rangiora-Ashley ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Establish a review of delivery of services so the community's expectations and needs are met.

    Support council's establishment of the in-house business unit to deliver 'Local Water Done Well', retaining local ownership and control.

    Support innovation and modern technology to improve rubbish and recycling facilities, minimising waste.

  • Maintain cost-effective dog licensing using the tags system, appreciate dog parks as a great asset and ensure well-cared missing animals.

    Maintain excellent rubbish collection with well-run disposal at the Southbrook station and support its expansion as recycling has progressed significantly.

    Support Waimakariri as the first council approved business in house for Local Water Done Well, with most other councils following this model. So proud.

  • Develop resident anti-litter practices from not littering to picking up litter or groups picking up rubbish at parks or beaches.

    Review from resident perspectives on rubbish and recycling, their challenges, and develop methods to better recycle.

  • Continue the planned programme of upgrades and maintenance to world-class drinking water, storm water and waste water systems.

    Continue the programme of street cleaning, tree trimming, graffiti removal and other actions to ensure the district is safe and attractive.

    Reduce costs to ratepayers for recycling and green waste collection to encourage less waste to landfill.

  • Maintain reliable, safe and affordable drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services under local control.

  • Continue to investigate alternative parking arrangements, such as all-day parking permits or zones for out-of-town employees.

    Investigate investing or partnering in a local recycling facility for recycling that is not currently able to be recycled regionally.

    Investigate the pros and cons of requiring green bins at all urban residential properties.
