The Waimakariri District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the Rangiora-Ashley ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.     Support growth that supports local contractors and employment while investing in capital expenditure to keep infrastructure and maintenance up to date.

  • Develop potential tourism opportunities such as trails, hubs and unique sites that can be marketed to encourage visitors and tours.

    Launch a local economic development plan for residents, businesses, farmers, organisations and sectors to map out how to improve the district.

    Lobby for and encourage Environment Canterbury to improve bus services within and to Waimakariri for children, older people and local business.

  • Encourage and facilitate more signature events within the district.

    Encourage and grow youth internships in the council.

    Investigate establishing a local recycling facility for recycling that is not currently able to be recycled regionally.

  • Ensure council rules and restrictions encourage, not deter, visitors to main shopping areas.

    Invest in core infrastructure that drives economic growth and resilience.

    Make council processes faster and simpler for businesses and developers.

  • Establish a community support officer to work with community groups to bring events and activities that achieve financial benefits.

    Invest in community development, infrastructure and facilities to support local and youth employment, meeting the community needs.

    Work with urban and rural businesses to support their economic goals, achieving growth and improving local job opportunities and security.

  • Continue to make Waimakariri District an attractive and profitable place to establish a business.

    Encourage more people to move to the district to boost the economy and sustainably accommodate 14,000 to 17,000 new homes into the future.
