Waipā District Council

Te Awamutu and Kihikihi General Ward
The Waipā District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). three councillors will be elected from the Te Awamutu and Kihikihi ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Continue to support the Kihikihi, Te Awamutu to Hamilton bus service operation and encourage local residents to use the service.

    Maintain local roads and footpaths to a reasonable and serviceable standard and clean and keep stormwater grates and road gutters serviceable.

    Promote extension of urban speed restrictions as urban and residential development extends town boundaries for residents’ safety.

  • Develop common sense walking and cycling paths around the Te Awamutu and Pirongia areas which are affordable and wanted by locals.

    Plan for the future infrastructure, roading and transport needs of the future.

    Support public transport and consider extending the bus service between Cambridge and Te Awamutu.

  • Ensure safe access for mobility scooters for an ageing population.

    Work with central government to build a Te Awamutu to Pirongia bike trail.

    Work with government to create a bypass around Te Awamutu's main street for heavy trucks for safety reasons and to encourage the use of cycling.
