The Far North District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Work with central government and other partners to increase social housing in the Far North.

    Participate in modernisation of the Resource Management Act to make it more clear and efficient, enabling better outcomes for the economy and environment.

    Collaborate on our council-owned pensioner housing with a view to increase stock. We must support our most vulnerable.

  • Support housing densification and diversity in urban areas across the district.

    Commit to council issuing resource consents within statutory timeframes to enable development of housing.

    Commit to council introducing development contribution charges by 2024.

  • Complete the Kerikeri Waipāpa Spatial Plan and then look to use it as a template for other communities.

    Complete the statutory process for the district plan capturing walking, cycling opportunities and development contributions.

    Complete the regional sports hub. Develop a framework to support smaller communities with management of their public places and spaces.
