Far North District Council

Bay of Islands-Whangaroa General Ward
The Far North District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper.   • Develop an equitable and sustainable funding model for community sporting and art facilities across the district.

    Enable art in public spaces through policy, partnership funding and capital delivery.

    Maintain what we already have, so it can be utilised to its full potential!

  • Understand and improve the longer term strategy to ensure all communities have access to public facilities appropriate for their size.

    Make our footpaths safer for pedestrians and cyclists by separating these where possible.

    Make our town centres vibrant places where our community wants to gather.

  • Complete the work towards an arts and culture strategy.

    Ensure that our Sport Implementation plan is resourced to be able to deliver the sport and recreation goals our communities are seeking.

    Increase resources for monitoring and compliance of licensed establishments.

  • Complete the regional sports hub.

    Support the community board grant fund to ensure community events are funded and supported.
