Hastings District Council

Hastings-Havelock North General Ward
The Hastings District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Seven councillors will be elected from the Hastings-Havelock North ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hastings District Council election.

Why I'm standing

Local government will likely have more responsibilities placed on it by central government, such as dealing with climate change and social housing. There are also challenges in respect of Three Waters Reform, meaning a loss of revenue of up to a third to council and possibly no direct governance influence in Entity C. This proposed new era of local government environment has prompted me to stand to represent our community.

About me

I have lived in the Hastings District nearly all my life and am passionate about my district. As a Fellow Chartered Accountant I have used my skills to help community organisations, such as co-founding Radio Kidnappers and as a past chair of the Art Deco Trust. I am also an historian who has published 15 books on the region, which will give me good knowledge about the past while focusing on the future.

My priorities
  1. Ensure Three Waters reform representation within Entity C to effectively aid our decision making.
  2. Develop plans for more social housing to provide dignity for our people.
  3. Avoid unnecessary council spending by ensuring rate rises are not funding non-essential expenditure
