Hawke's Bay Regional Council

Heretaunga/Hastings General Constituency
The Hawke's Bay Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Three councillors will be elected from the Heretaunga/Hastings constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

  • Combine and enhance biosecurity and pest eradication initiatives to bring urban contribution into native birds protection.

    Increase scientific monitoring of all Te Karamu waterways, making data easily accessible and understandable. Publish trends and hotspots.

    Encourage guardianship of waterways to assist with planting and pollution protection.

  • Ensure that pest management programmes are tied to our biodiversity projects to ensure best outcomes and value for ratepayers.

    Develop community strategies to create zero waste homes and businesses.

    Work with urban and rural communities to build community programmes to enhance their local areas. Best outcomes are achieved by community.

  • Predator control is an important tool to protect native plants and birds. Trapping and shooting pests in my block has increased bird life.

    I don't support the dam as we don't want intensified farming in our dry region.

    As an ex Police prosecutor I have an interest in environment enforcement and will ensure a common sense approach.

  • Be the council where people say, "those guys were great they really helped us with...".

    Support the community with pest control, tree planting, waste reduction and other initiatives that enhance the environment.

    Develop water storage options, especially those that use stored water to boost river flows in summer.

  • Prioritise riparian planting throughout the Karamu River system for water quality and biodiversity enhancement.

    Extend Sustainable Homes scheme to include greywater recycling.

    Establish a dedicated fund to support environment groups with administration costs.
