Hawke's Bay Regional Council

Heretaunga/Hastings General Constituency
The Hawke's Bay Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Three councillors will be elected from the Heretaunga/Hastings constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Commit to 'safe' biking infrastructure for our region, for both recreational and road biking users.

    Work with community to develop a long term vision that provides effective and low carbon public transport for our region.

    Investigate the raillink service to reconnect central Hawke's Bay through to Napier, reducing cars on the road and lowering carbon emissions.

  • Give clear direction on the viability of rail whether its passengers from Waipukurau or logs from Wairoa.

    Bikes work best when cyclists feel safe. Concentrate on key arterial routes and make them safer.

    Frequency of bus transport is increasing to every 10-15 minutes at peak times, but not for several years. Bring the timetable forward.

  • Double down on the commitment to boosting alternatives to private motor vehicle transport – bus/train/cycle/walk.

  • Public transport is adequate. We do not have the population to support an increase.

    Appeal to government to return 80km/h SH5 back to 100km/h. It's safer than the Napier Taihape open road for goodness sake.

  • Operate with the honest and right balance between cars, bikes, walking and public transport.

    Commit to dedicated off road cycleways and walkways alongside Te Karamu waterways, linking all towns and cities.
