Kāpiti Coast District At Large
The Kāpiti Coast District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the district. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the district). This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Make it easy to live without a car through better planning, pedestrian-friendly streets, more cycleways and better public transport.

    Incorporate worst-case scenario sea level rise in all planning and ensure the benefits of any council adaptation efforts are equitable.

  • Create greater sense of urgency of crisis among district population and businesses. Council leading by example on reducing carbon emissions.

    Practical advice to businesses about being climate-friendly like buying sustainable materials and donating furniture being replaced.

    Constructively engaging with vulnerable coastal properties about protective measures. Hasn't been handled well here.

  • Support Kāpiti Coast District Council setting our own carbon emissions targets in line and possibly better ones than the regional and national targets. Voted yes.

    Continue to lobby for increased rollout of public electric vehicle chargers in places they will be needed, ie college, shopping centres.

    Will continue seven years of lobbying for the budget for increased renewal of the council vehicle fleet with hybrid and electric vehicles over petrol.

  • Establish Kāpiti Coast District Council as a visible role model of a sustainable business. Council needs to practice what it encourages others to do.

    Create a sense of urgency in the community around the need to take action with respect to climate change.

    Provide tools and resources so that individuals and businesses within our community understand what they need to do differently.

  • Increase use of sustainable transport modes for local trips within the district.

  • Prioritise climate change action for council.

    Engage climate change as a priority across all areas of our district.

    Ensure good robust trustworthy information about climate change is available to our district.
