Napier City Council

Ahuriri Ward
The Napier City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Two councillors will be elected from the Ahuriri ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Napier City Council election.

Environment

Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Develop regional park to help treat our stormwater, protect Ahuriri Esturary, protect wildlife and absorb more CO2.

Continue our waste minimisation program and support local businesses to create a circular economy (one's waste is another's resource).

Transition the aquarium into more wildlife rehabilitation activities, and inspiration for caring for our environment.

  • Fix water quality in Napier as this still needs more work. I also do not support Three Waters. This should remain in rate payers hands.

Recycling crates do not seem to be fit for purpose. Strong wind blows rubbish out of them creating more work for council to clean up.

Eradicate pests in Napier as this needs more work. Napier Hill has large green areas which is a haven for birds but also rats and possums.

  • Water quality and preservation is a primary focus for the city at present with Three Waters being implemented by the government.

Waste minimisation and management is required to re-purpose and redefine waste in more useful ways rather than landfills, ie composting.

Biodiversity and pest control is less of a city wide issue. I prefer chemical-free alternatives such as trapping and limiting glyphosate use.

  • Support the Ahuriri Park development and its emphasis on improving our local environment and water quality.

All Council investment in parks and reserves should consider including plans for biodiversity.

Every effort should be made to reduce waste to landfill and to educate our community about the best practices to achieve this.

  • Retain water assets within Hawke's Bay provincial governance to ensure transparency and accountability.

Continue investigation into long term removal of chlorine from our water.

Continue upgrading the Three Waters infrastructure and actively investigate options for disposal of wastewater.
