Transport

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Reducing of speed limits is not the answer to fixing our roading. Actual fixing of roads in a quick efficient and cost effective way is.

Look into providing better service for airport travel than the current monopoly. The people of Napier effectively have only one choice.

Continue with the policies of providing good walking and cycleways.

  • Implement learnings from other cities on what works and what doesn't in the transition to a lower carbon emission transportation network.

Build stronger relationships with Waka Kotahi so we have more influence when advocating for our region.

Continue to work with the port and community to enable maximum port capacity with minimal noise from operations and trucks for residents.

  • Revitalising the Hawke's Bay public transport system, including a more efficient on demand public transport (small buses).

Maintain and improve high quality roading in the region and develop more cycle paths to encourage safe cycling for leisure and transport.

Investigate alternative methods of road calming in high risk areas, including auditing speed limits.

  • Maintain traffic infrastructure about the town to enable smooth vehicle flow and less obstacles. Reduce congestion and keep traffic flowing.

Continue linking cycle lanes and walkways to create greater connectivity and reduce fuel emissions. Promote more e-scooter use and e-bikes.

Ensure our port and airports optimise their usage but are respectful of housing areas and the citizens of Napier.

  • Ownership of our airport is vital for the ongoing support of our economy and our transport network and needs to be retained.

Road safety is important but needs to not be at the expense of ease of movement throughout our city.

Lobbying central government to four lane the expressway to ease congestion must be a priority.
