Nelson City Council

Stoke-Tāhunanui General Ward
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Four councillors will be elected from the Stoke-Tāhunanui General ward. The other councillors will be elected from other wards or by all voters in the district. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Nelson City Council election.

Why I'm standing

I am tired of money being wasted on planning projects that the community don't want. We need better budgeting and an improved tendering process so that cost over-runs are stopped. Infrastructure maintenance needs to be improved – it is cheaper to maintain roads and storm water drains than to repair them due to poor maintenance. We need to make our city more resilient and do more to combat climate change.

About me

I started up two successful businesses in Nelson, so I know the importance of budgeting, team work, customer service and being adaptable and innovative. With my life experience and qualifications in science, tourism, engineering and business I have a lot of practical and essential skills to share. I am a long term visionary who is both practical and caring for the environment, as well as being concerned about the implications of climate change.

My priorities
  1. Encourage installation of residential solar power systems so families can save on their power bills.
  2. Purchase small electric buses for a more frequent peak hour bus service between Nelson and Richmond.
  3. Introduce a by-law banning the dumping of consumable food to reduce both food costs and landfill.
