New Plymouth District Council

New Plymouth District At Large
The New Plymouth District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the five councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city). This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the New Plymouth District Council election.

Why I'm standing

Unprecedented times are calling on us: to be courageous, insightful, resourceful. To innovate and to connect. As a strategist with a background in tech entrepreneurship, I've learnt to navigate complex human, technological and financial dynamics in big-picture contexts. North Taranaki has enormous potential and faces significant challenges. I believe my focus on radical transparency, decision-making and planning around the best available evidence, and deep and authentic representation will enable me to serve the district well.

About me

Through Startup Taranaki, I help people realise ambitious and enterprising dreams. As Chair of Sustainable Taranaki, I support region-wide sustainability. As The Opportunities Party candidate, my platform is equity, transparency and evidence-based policy. The technology enterprise I cofounded in China aimed to improve the employment outlook for China's working class. As a volunteer Operations Manager on an international conservation vessel, I worked to protect natural environments. What I do matters more than what I say.

My priorities
  1. Protect local democracy in the face of increasing outside control (Three Waters, Resource Management Act reform).
  2. Turn threat into opportunity – leadership in climate change mitigation for competitive advantage.
  3. Simplify council processes and communication to better facilitate participation and partnership.
