Tasman District Council

Lakes-Murchison Ward
The Tasman District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). One councillor will be elected from the Lakes-Murchison ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Tasman District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Support government product stewardship schemes.

Support the protection and enhancement of infrastructure such as water, wastewater and stormwater services.

Continue user pays/targeted rates so rural communities aren't unfairly rated, eg recycling.

  • Establish efficient and effective collection and processing of agricultural recycling streams.

Protect and ultimately remove historic rubbish dumps on the edges of rivers.

Work with other councils to find solutions to recycle our own materials rather than shipping them off for others to deal with.

  • Examine logistic supply chains of all resources and services and reevaluate with potential non-monetary concept as a new cornerstone.

Do the right thing. Reject 'affordability, inflation, debt, fiscal, markets' etc as false. Embrace responsible, sustainable, integrity.

Open talks on what we all need/expect from council/industry/each other. Revisit new opportunities from the proposed abandonment of money.

  • Stop the Three Water debacle. Look at FENZ, social housing, health care, roads, education, the government does not deliver better.

Make recycling easier. The cost needs to be on the manufacturer and not the end user but the government won't act without pressure.

A rethink of our river policies is required as increased flooding is no longer something we can ignore.
