Tasman District Council

Motueka Ward
The Tasman District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Motueka ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Tasman District Council election.

Transport

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Upgrade local roads to ensure they are fit for purpose, and advocate for improvements to address safety issues.

Ensure that Motueka Ward has a sustainable transport network that supports our reduction goals and connects communities and workplaces.

Collaborate with Waka Kotahi to invest in shared pathways and cycleways.

  • Advocate to Waka Kotahi for urgent upgrade of the State Highway 6900 – Motueka Bridge.

Advocate to bring forward public transport links from Motueka to Nelson by 2023. Commitment to ongoing investment in public transport.

Remedial work to the King Edward Street round-about to allow heavy vehicles to utilise this junction.

  • I am no expert! But I am passionate about the Motueka region, I offer to be an advocate if people want action over these issues.

Congestion is an ongoing issue, some of the improvements made need adjustment but a long-term plan needs to be actioned.
