Tasman District Council

Motueka Ward
The Tasman District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Motueka ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Tasman District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Commit to listen, consult and keep connected to the community to ensure decisions reflect the aspirations of ratepayers.

Oppose the government's current proposed Three Waters reform.

High Street, Motueka is a focal point and destination with clean streets, well-presented footpaths and pothole-free roads.

  • Offer to be a strong advocate if the community are not happy with the status quo.

Three Waters. My opinion does not matter however a recent poll clearly shows option D.

I will fight for a return to option D over the dam costs.

  • Advocate for the interests of our district in the Three Waters reform including understanding the implications of workable alternatives.

Lead initiatives to improve our environmental performance, especially to improve recycling, and support the creation of a circular economy.

Strengthen our stormwater network and flood protections to better respond to significant weather events and reduce waterway contamination.

  • Improve our waste management system and service provisions to ensure we are capturing every opportunity to reduce waste.

Be a strong voice for the protection of clean drinking water for now and future generations by being informed on immediate and future needs.

Ensure our region gets a fair deal as we navigate the reform of our water infrastructure. Advocacy and leadership will really count here.
