Taupō General Ward
The Taupō District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Seven councillors will be elected from the Taupō ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Implement housing strategy that addresses sustainability, affordable and social homes, the use of passive building and green star standards.

    Continue work to put pedestrians, cyclists, mums with prams and mobility scooters ahead of cars in our town centres through the district.

    Advocate for a good amount of community feedback containing views, ideas and solutions in the district plan consultation process happening.

  • Ensure all councillors attend workshops that strengthen knowledge and support towards environmental and social governance/sustainability criteria, metrics, compliance.

    Review construction sector's transformation plan within construction accord and collaborate with local reps reuptake and alignment.

    Facilitate knowledge sharing, liaise with prof bodies (architects, engineers, builders etc) to increase productivity by innovation.

  • Create a new strategy to involve local people in all plans of future developments and improve communications with ratespayers.

    Put real efforts to support first home buyers and find more effective ways to help with housing shortages within council's capacity.

    Plan proper infrastructure for new neighbourhoods to avoid traffic hazards and unnecessary pressure on our roads and recreational spaces.

  • Support the better consideration of alternative housing options, including tiny homes and trailer-home parks.

    Support better consideration of building coverage limits for residential properties to allow for higher density housing developments.

    Support changes to building height restrictions to allow for taller buildings in the Taupō CBD, which will be of benefit to local businesses.

  • Commit to the development of a compact and medium-density town center to reduce the need for travel by car and add vibrancy to the CBD.

    Commit to doubling the number of social houses in the local area to at least meet the OECD average and better support those most in need.

  • Actively engage with and promote the council housing strategy with a key focus on affordability and market access.

    Actively support the Taupō Town Centre Transformation project and work towards getting it finished.

    Promote through the district plan change process the appropriate supply of land zoned to meet community needs.
