Taupō General Ward
The Taupō District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Seven councillors will be elected from the Taupō ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.     Undertake feasibility of parades, music and occasions that bring foot traffic into the town. Benchmark and measure results.

    Provide open opportunities to trial new use of existing facilities particularly as climate change and weather patterns reduce outdoor opportunities.

  • See through sports and recreation strategy and stocktake of council facilities and how sports, recreation and art groups can benefit by hubs.

    Revitalise events in post Covid-19 environment and borders reopening meaning more jobs and economic growth and opportunities.

    Update the Great Lake Centre to 21st century standards and make it more user friendly with kitchen facilities, sound systems and useable spaces.

  • Pursue the ongoing development of the Sport and Recreation Policy as it applies to all council facilities.

    Pursue the ongoing development of the Art and Culture Policy with a focus on local culture and expression.

  • Propose longer opening times for Taupō library and AC Baths which are currently quite limited for weekday evenings and weekends.

    Support the greater utilisation of Lake Taupō as a venue for water borne events eg Flochella music event.

  • Investigate the feasibility of a new museum and arts centre as part of any new conference and exhibition centre to create a cultural heart.

    Upgrade the Great Lake Centre to bring it up to standard as a usable theatre or look at alternatives for its future use and development.

    Make better use of the amphitheater and CBD as an entertainment precinct through less oppressive liquor licensing and management.
