Taupō General Ward
The Taupō District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Seven councillors will be elected from the Taupō ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Work with airlines to improve the frequency and variation of connections to the upgraded Taupō Airport.

    Ensure that all the alternatives and funding options for a second CBD river crossing are considered as soon as possible.

    Work to improve commuter connections to western communities and the southern lake by expanding public transport options and frequency.

  • Examine imbalance re catering to demands of some new subdivisions and businesses, ie retirement villages, over others, ie Kinloch, Acacia Bay.

    Bring forward discussions about a new bridge that will ease pressure and chaos over summer while. Improving safety for cyclists/walkers.

    Examine the management plan regarding Taupō District Council roading and the impact of poorly maintained roads (potholes) on heavy vehicles and family cars.

  • Listen to our local people before going ahead with projects that impact on their daily lives, we must have our priorities right.

    Discuss ways to ease bad traffic situations in town, locally and with experts, invest in safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

    Treat the expanding and improvement of the Taupō Airport as a high priority, lobby the central government to contribute more to the project.

  • See the new airport project through to completion.

    See through council all being back under one roof.

    Continue widening shared paths and finishing gravel local rural roads being sealed.

  • Ensure Taupō District Council maintains an effective voice at the regional transport committee table.

    Pursue business focus on a second Waikato River bridge in a timely way.

    Continue advocacy for alternate modes of transport in and around Taupō. Ongoing support for groups like Bike Taupō.

  • More closely supervise transportation improvements for efficiency, road safety, and provision for pedestrians and cycling.

    Investigate transport options to Taupō town for north of the Control Gates bridge. There may be cheaper options than just a new bridge.

    Strongly support improved infrastructure and road safety initiatives for walking and cycling in the district, including for sport cyclists.
