Thames-Coromandel District Council

Mercury Bay Ward
The Thames-Coromandel District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Mercury Bay ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Eliminate one lane bridges.

    Investigate the way gravel roads are maintained. Also, the way sealed roads are maintained.

    Investigate the possibility of making the roads more cycle friendly.

  • Support coastal villages with traffic calming measures and speed reduction.

  • Lobby NZTA to make sure money is spent on maintaining and upgrading state highways on the Coromandel

    Work with the Mercury Bay Aero club and other interested parties to bring a sealed runway for commercial and recreational flights.

    Develop more cycle trails and tracks for the benefit of residents and visitors to make the most of all the Coromandel has to offer.

  • Encourage communities to be healthy and active by providing walking and cycle ways that are safe, accessible and utilise local attractions.

    Review current road funding and maintenance policies, and ensure our roads are safe and well maintained for locals and visitors.
