The Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including two members from your area, and three councillors from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Support decreasing urban sprawl and making it easier to build "tiny houses."

    Scrap any bylaw that prioritises car parking and compliance with car parking.

    Support rent freeze during high inflationary times on council housing.

  • Encourage residents to use better methods such as double glazing, heat pump, dehumidifiers etc. to get dry and warm homes.

    Maintain green spaces.

  • Develop affordable, sustainable, multi-storey (more than five floors) state/council houses in suburban areas to address housing issues.

    Minimise housing development, especially single to three storey houses in the central city to save valuable centre city spaces.

    Supply affordable and sustainable houses to young and low-income families either by rental or on long term lease.
