Rates and revenue

The work of local government is funded mainly by property taxes in the local area, known as rates. This makes up around 60% of council expenditure, with the rest coming from user charges, investment income, regulatory fees and roading subsidies. Councils can also borrow money to spread the cost of large investments such as infrastructure over a longer period of time.

  • Bring back 'big brother'. Finance committee is our $$$$ watchdog. Should never have been stood down.

Be diligent in forward planning to make sure Whangārei District Council is well placed for future growth. It is essential to meet Long-term Plan (LTP) spending requirements.

With good LTP in place, we can get fairly close to our rating forecasts. This is always open ended, we never know what lurks ahead of us.

  • Reduce council debt

Look for better investments or areas where investments can be more profitable for the council.

Stop using allocated money on new projects.
