Mayor of Dunedin

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Dunedin City Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

Our city has huge potential. We are a city of firsts and we were once the powerhouse of the country. I think we can do that again particularly in the tech sector with weightless exports, more jobs and an economic boost for a better future for your children and mine.

About me

I am open, honest and fair with two terms of experience on council. As a former journalist I haven't been afraid to ask hard questions and push for transparency. My masters in business entrepreneurship helps me to see problems as opportunities. I am a member of the Institute of Directors and Dunedin Rotary. I am married to Mike and have two teenage children. I answer only to the people of Dunedin.

My priorities
  1. Continue putting pressure on government to build Dunedin's hospital to the design that was promised.
  2. Keep spending focused and disciplined, keeping rates sustainable while still investing.
  3. Support the arts sector to build a professional theatre to ensure the city is vibrant and liveable.
