Gisborne District Council

Tairāwhiti General Ward
The Gisborne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Eight councillors will be elected from the Tairāwhiti General ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Gisborne District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe that Tairāwhiti is currently in a unique position to capitalise on our isolation, our beaches and the beauty of our region. It offers commercial opportunities in tourism, bio science, farming, viticulture, agriculture, horticulture and fishing but we need to be a CONNECTED region with a coordinated approach to transportation, digital capability, capacity for attracting finance, investment and visitors. We need advocates and strong relationship builders that actively sell our region to the world.

About me

I was born in Te Puia Springs, I consider Highway 35 "My Patch" – I've worked across the Eastland Region for the NZPO installing critical Telecommunications infrastructure. I've worked for Allied Petroleum installing and managing fuel dispensing installations at Waihau Bay, Ruatoria, Te Araroa, Manutuke, Matawai, Nuhaka and Mahia. I was commercial manager for Digicel in the Pacific Islands introducing mobile banking services to remote communities in PNG and online medical and legal services

My priorities
  1. Implement alternative transport options for the region. Barging and rail priorities – keep connected.
  2. Investigate Hydrogen fuel refuelling for heavy transport working with Waitomo and Hiringa Energy
  3. Establishing connected communities through technology and digital inclusion at all ages. Medical, legal.
