The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is one of 21 local boards in Auckland. The local board makes a plan for your area and decides on local issues, activities and facilities. It also oversees council services and facilities in your area, including libraries and parks. The local board is made up of eight members. Members are elected to represent different subdivisions within the local board area. Four members will be elected from your area. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. From parks and libraries to museums and art galleries, councils can be a key supporter of sporting, recreational and cultural events that bring communities to life. Community facilities, including sports grounds and town halls, are often owned and run by councils.

  • Combine sporting facilities as a practical option where they are supporting a small area, eg combine the bowling club and boating club.

    Replace Whangaparaoa Hall. It is way past its use by date, build a facility, eg Stanmore Bay and push for combined use for all community events.

    Encourage use of our beaches/parks for festivals and events that will bring others from outside the region, bringing revenue to the area.

  • Support the development of existing public sports facilities like the Orewa Beach basketball court.

    Encourage utilisation of facilities by the youth of the Hibiscus Coast.

    Continue to encourage local organisations to develop new sport and recreation facilities.

  • Encourage and support events like festivals, markets, concerts to create vibrant communities.

    Ensure necessary upgrades to public recreational facilities including floodlighting, proper drainage, playgrounds and toilets are actioned.

  • Invest in the public facilities including community halls and parks needed for new growing areas such as Millwater.

    Support community sports groups to facilitate engaging community events and tournaments.

    More community events and festivals that celebrate our diversity and multicultural strength.

  • Push for equitable funding for arts and culture with a special focus on Tangata Whenua and immigrant communities to promote diversity.

  • Deliver a community centre/hub for the Whangaparāoa Peninsula community.

    Seek agreement from councillors that running community amenities is not a primary place for cost savings.

    Initiate more control, as far as a local board can, over the number of and location of both liquor and vape sources.
