Taradale Ward
The Napier City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Four councillors will be elected from the Taradale ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Climate change and resilience

  • Develop an active transport committee to champion safe routes for cycling, scootering and walking. Reduce reliance on cars.

    Develop a regional spatial plan for Hawke's Bay to enable working together in areas such as housing and greenfield growth away from the coast.

    Encourage renewable energy use, such as solar on housing.

  • Promote public transport, car-pooling, electric vehicles and cycling, to reduce the number of one-person cars and to meet the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) targets for 2030 and 2050.

    Encourage extensive 'green' (land-based) and 'blue' (ocean-based) carbon sequestration. This includes biodiversity projects.

    Include disabled people in disaster planning and management, to strengthen protection of disabled and elderly in civil defence situations.

  • Reduce green house gas emissions by reducing the use of motor vehicles and promoting active transport as a viable and sustainable option.

    Educate the Taradale residents as to their options in the event of a tsunami. Signpost the escape pathways to the higher ground.

  • Commit to council assessing the forty three climate change risks and their consequences for Napier.

  • Commit to more riparian planting along waterways and coastal edges to help reduce erosion.

    Commit to reducing the rate of deforestation.

    Ensuring that our stormwater infrastructure is at an acceptable level in order to mitigate flooding events such as 2020.
