Climate change and resilience
Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.
Earthquake strengthening. Many homes have been neglected regarding earthquake damage. Ratepayers did not receive sufficient funds and advice.
Adapt to climate change. Climate changes through long period of time. People need help and education to adapt the change.
Adapt to greenhouse gas emissions. First research and educate people about harmful gases and how to support the change.
Ensure that sufficient resources are allocated to mitigate flooding, along the waterways and surface flooding on roads.
Insist on an affordable, accessible and reliable public transport system.
Consult with the community on the plans and consequences of climate change and associated policies.
Support the development of an affordable, accessible, and reliable public mass rapid transit system.
Plan with communities for consequences of climate change and a fair transition – so poor and working-class people don't bear all the costs.
Support the further development of retention basins along the upper Heathcote to reduce flooding downstream.
