The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including two members from your area, and three councillors from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Ensure that housing intensification is appropriate and in line with accessible infrastructure and access to amenities.

    Support the availability of safe, affordable social housing with sufficient green space for families.

    Continue to advocate for safe and welcoming residential streets. Slower traffic, parks and places for neighbours to engage with each other.

  • Building consents: Sometimes building consents take a long time and builders are unable to finish work.

    Council housing: The council houses should be fairly distributed taking consideration for all races.

    Land supply and zoning: Land is too expensive where middle class cannot afford to buy and build homes.

  • Support the retention and development of Council/Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust housing.

    Support density done well, in locations where the infrastructure has (or can have) sufficient capacity.

    Support living streets, slowing traffic speeds where appropriate, adding street furniture, and making sure every child has a park nearby.
