Waitomo Rural Ward
The Waitomo District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waitomo Rural ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. From parks and libraries to museums and art galleries, councils can be a key supporter of sporting, recreational and cultural events that bring communities to life. Community facilities, including sports grounds and town halls, are often owned and run by councils.

  • As the son of a long term licensing trustee, I am aware of of the problems that our residents and retailers face.

    Assist in any events/festivals, anything that promotes getting people together.

  • Facilitate more community events this summer to increase tourism to the area.

    Increase funding to public facilities to support initiatives, to encourage local use and tourist visits including reduced fees for locals.

    Create a tri-annual Waitomo Arts and Crafts event to support local artistans and alternatively situate them in Mokau, Piopio and Waitomo.

  • Preserve, maintain and enhance libraries, pools, sports, recreational and cultural facilities – they are vital to community wellbeing.

    Preserve parks and reserves. Green space is vital and should be preserved for community and urban biodiversity wellbeing.

    Find ways to support more arts and cultural events within the district – these enrich the social fabric of communities.
