Waitomo District Council

Waitomo Rural Ward
The Waitomo District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waitomo Rural ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Find an affordable way to preserve and enhance weather damaged roading in a timely manner now and in the future.

    Oppose working rural roads being turned in quasi cycleways – farm traffic and large numbers of cyclists are a dangerous combination.

    Investigate whether council can play a role in providing affordable sustainable share-traffic – eg electric share cars.

  • Get feedback on cycleway viability, given that we are a high vehicle ownership area.

  • Increase and upgrade footpaths in smaller towns in the district for pedestrian safety.

    Increase road maintenance of both sealed and unsealed roads. Undertake a survey to identify unsealed roads which need upgrading to sealing.

    Bring in a local bylaw stipulating that unneeded traffic signs and cones must be removed within 48 hours after road works have been completed.
