Waitomo Rural Ward
The Waitomo District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waitomo Rural ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Increase council ownership of affordable homes for elderly, disabled and financially disadvantaged residents.

    Oppose rezoning in smaller towns in the district, designed to create higher density housing development, but ruining their unique character.

    Be guided by local needs with all zoning issues currently under discussion in council instigated by government Significant Natural Area designations.

  • Decide where the bottlenecks are in the planning process through consultation.

    Investigate all empty housing/commercial building, and work with owners on how these will be used.

    Address homelessness immediately, no-one wants to see our neighbours in such a situation, especially if we have housing stock available.

  • Ensure farming and rural activities are the predominant activity in rural zones and are not impeded by lifestyle residential housing.

    Find ways to have affordable residential housing that is not so high density that it does not allow trees and urban biodiversity.

    Make sure future growth planning doesn't create a world of traffic jams like other regions.
