Waitomo Rural Ward
The Waitomo District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waitomo Rural ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Emphasise the importance to our community of maintaining, restoring and preserving a healthy and diverse environment.

    Ensure (with or without Three Waters) drinking water, waste water and storm water are fit for purpose and affordable for now and the future.

    Ensure the council supports and promotes healthy waterways, coastlines, bio-diversity and pest control.

  • Support trapping initiatives for wild cat and possum populations rather than 1080 drops, which are safety hazards for hunters and birds.

    Change designation of Significant Natural Area categories opposed by local residents and ratepayers, for being unworkable and creating financial hardship.

    Encourage local communities to find innovative ways to approach waste management and support these initiatives.

  • Implement water quality and preservation in each part of the rohe. Consult on which area is first and what needs to be remediated.

    Find new incentives to recycle, separating vegetation.

    Find new ways to recover larger items, like bikes, chairs, shelving from landfill.
