Waitomo District Council

Waitomo Rural Ward
The Waitomo District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waitomo Rural ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Waitomo District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Ensure (with or without Three Waters) drinking water, waste water and storm water are fit for purpose and affordable for now and the future.

Find ways to make waste reduction and recycling easier and more effective – especially in rural areas.

Support gas extraction at Te Kuiti Landfill and investigate if enhanced recycling facilities are viable.

  • Three Waters affects council and residents, and requires more discussion to address the lack of understanding in the community in general.

I am intensely interested in animal control and dog licensing, to move as quickly as possible to a zero kill pound.

  • Drinking water.

    Rubbish and recycling.

  • Increase recycling options for the whole Waitomo district including increased opening hours of existing facilities.

Support Waitomo District joining with other councils in 'Communities 4 Local Democracy' to provide an alternative to Three Waters.

Create a reduced maximum dog registration fee for responsible rural owners of working and hunting dogs.
