Kāpiti Coast District At Large
The Kāpiti Coast District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. This election is for the elected by all voters in the district. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the district). This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Investigate Kāpiti's proximity to the capital to develop a disaster recovery centre.

  • Action the climate change and resilience strategy and continue stormwater work.

    Continue to reduce district-wide emissions.

    Work with communities and neighbourhoods to ensure they are prepared in an emergency.

  • Commit to strengthening the network of community emergency hubs and home emergency preparedness and making community board members leaders.

    Commit to supporting more natural energy-producing community schemes such as community solar energy plants, wind farms and energy from waste.

    Continue to advocate for waterway health and maintenance and stronger government legislation for the forestry industry to remove slash.

  • Support continuing development of Council's climate change and resilience strategy.

    Support Council's previously agreed aspirational goal of net zero emissions by 2040 and strategies for achieving this.
