The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including Two members from your area, and three members from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Implement smarter flood management by upgrading stormwater systems, improving drainage and using natural solutions like wetlands to reduce flooding risks.

    Invest in coastal protection and dune restoration to reduce erosion and safeguard homes, parks and public spaces.

    Support community-led local groups to prepare for extreme weather events, including emergency planning, community hubs and support networks.

  • Bring more services back to the suburbs, including accessible eco-friendly smaller buses able to travel through the suburbs.

    Build up the stock banks to a level that will not cause flooding anywhere along the river.

    Make Burwood’s green spaces safer and secure for cyclists and walkers as a priority while not overspending on cycleways.

  • Ensure civil defence infrastructure, policies and procedures are current and fit for purpose for the Burwood community.

    Prioritise clean energy initiatives.

  • Continue the installation of storm water retention ponds along the Avon Otakaro river network to help limit flooding in the future.

    Continue to support the urban forest plan to increase the tree canopy in the eastern suburbs.
