The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including Two members from your area, and three members from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Continue to support the roll-out of the urban forest plan in the East, progressively increasing tree cover and amenity across the East.

    Ensure eastside communities are able to participate in coastal hazards adaptation planning process, dovetailing with other consultations.

  • Continue to advocate for more trees in eastern suburbs.

    Encourage community planning for localised hazards or crises.

    Support completion of the tsunami plan for at-risk parts of the area.

  • Advocate for stormwater upgrades and coastal protection based on clear climate-impact data.

    Push for the council to investigate a home insurance scheme for at-risk local areas.

    Support community-led resilience plans to prepare neighbourhoods for climate events.
