Rates and revenue

The work of local government is funded mainly by property taxes in the local area, known as rates. This makes up around 60% of council expenditure, with the rest coming from user charges, investment income, regulatory fees and roading subsidies. Councils can also borrow money to spread the cost of large investments such as infrastructure over a longer period of time.

  • Create a report of council expenditure showing where all the money is going. Ensure we are getting the best deals on our spending.

  • Rates are a challenge. There is a need to provide a certain level of services. Cost increases (inflation) is outside council control.

Happy with council financial management. Need to ensure fees and charges are keep at a realistic level.

  • Work with the community to keep charges to a minimum, perhaps by doing some fundraising events in the town to keep the community together.
