Ashburton District Council

Ashburton Ward
The Ashburton District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Ashburton ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Have a road damage hotline, and a team dedicated to fixing damaged roads within a timely manner from receiving the complaint.

  • Our proposed second bridge need a conclusion. Government need to fund any shortfall. Remember they spent $55 million on a proposed walkway then canned it.

    Walking and cycling getting out in the fresh air needs to be encouraged. Probably no need for share bikes and e-scooters yet, but open minded.

  • Keep footpaths, roads etc up to standard so it is easy for people to use them.

    Start up a commuter train system for workers travelling to their nearby towns.

    Build a new public transport system to ensure people can move around town if they don't have transport.
