Kāpiti Coast District Council

Paraparaumu Ward
The Kāpiti Coast District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Three councillors will be elected from the Paraparaumu ward. The other councillors will be elected from other wards or by all voters in the district. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Commit to making decisions that do not waste money on climate change or any other project, such as the Kāpiti Gateway.

    Commit to listening to the rater payers and residents before voting on issues that have a financial or social impact on rate payers.

  • Advocate to establish an independent working group of relevant stakeholders into a climate emergency committee that feeds into council.

    Help to change mindsets of the general community with regard to sustainable practice and recycling.

    Advocate for the conversation and devise an ongoing plan around climate adaptation for our district. Issues are turning up now.

  • Increase climate change mitigation measures including works to prevent frequent flooding of the Waikanae estuary area.

    Increase prevention measures including investigating waste solutions as we are currently increasing transport emissions.
