Waitaki District Council

Oamaru Ward
The Waitaki District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Oamaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Waitaki District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe in the Waitaki as a special place, with heart. A positive, kind-hearted community with a 'can-do' attitude, that is prepared to roll up its sleeves and 'make things happen'. I'd like to play a part in realising the district's full economic and community potential.

About me

I managed Tōtara Estate for Heritage NZ, led its redevelopment, and initiated the Harvest Home festival. I developed and operated the award-winning live history show The Great Storm of 1868 in Oamaru's Summit Grain Store. I ran highly popular events such as Christmas at the Races and was involved in the Oamaru Operatic production of Les Miserables. I was on the Waitaki Development Board, Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust and Chair of the Waitaki Tourism Association.

My priorities
  1. Set-up a community owned trust offering affordable housing options. More people = growth and vibe.
  2. Support youth retention initiatives e.g. Mayors Taskforce, cadetships, tertiary provider set-up.
  3. Explore a connector bus service that links the North-end, hospital, gardens, Weston and Oamaru CBD.
