Levin General Ward
The Horowhenua District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Levin ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Continue to strengthen partnerships with local iwi and hapū; and community groups.

    Support a review of current election processes to change to a polling booth election system.

    Review the access and inclusion policies to include a dedicated role that will provide oversight on facilities, services and events.

  • Review current committees adopting an advisory panel structure where a more diverse range of groups are included with wider representation.

    Engage our community via best practice community engagement strategies that provide an opportunity to inform and influence decision making

  • Pay all council employees a Living Wage.

    Greater use of tools such as infographics and short videos to provide easy to engage with information about council decisions and processes.

    Review council buildings and communication pathways to ensure that there are no access barriers for people with a variety of disabilities.

  • Encourage engagement with the council via the school system.

    Engage with ethnic communities within our region and actively invite them to attend and participate in public meetings.
