Mayor of Auckland

The Auckland Mayor leads the governing body of Auckland Council. The mayor’s job is to promote a vision for Auckland and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Auckland Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

Auckland is a great place to live, work and play. But Aucklanders are being let down by a council which is failing. All over the city big expensive projects are overdue and over-budget, causing disruption to residents, traffic and business – not to mention a financial time bomb for ratepayers. Council-controlled organisations are out of control and not working for the public. I care what happens with your hard-earned rates and it frustrates me to see them wasted.

About me

I offer experienced leadership, skills in financial management and governance, and a track record of success. Throughout my career as an engineer, a businessman and a board chair I have fixed problems and turned around failing organisations. Governments of all stripes have recruited me to deliver big projects and sort out complex billion-dollar organisations including Vector, Transpower and Auckland District Health Board. I've delivered every time. Now we need to fix Auckland Council together.

My priorities
  1. Get the big overdue, over-budget infrastructure projects around the city back on track and finished.
  2. Bring council-controlled organisations back under control and focused on delivering for the people of Auckland.
  3. Cut wasteful spending and take a hard line on costs.
