Hutt City Council

Hutt City At Large
The Hutt City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the six councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city). This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hutt City Council election.

Why I'm standing

I've had two terms on council and I believe it is now putting the focus on the key tasks ahead of the city: investing more in water and sustainable transport infrastructure, reducing emissions, rebuilding Naenae pool (to Green Star 5 energy efficiency level), and getting the Riverlink floodway and transport improvements across the line. We need to up our game on planning for climate change impacts and resilience and focus on value for every rates dollar.

About me

As editor of The Hutt News for 27 years, I am very familiar with our community. I learned to listen carefully to all sides of an issue before coming to a conclusion. I am not aligned to any political group or voting 'bloc'; I strongly believe in making decisions on the merits of the argument, not a pre-conceived position. Community roles include volunteering as a driving licence coach at Youth Inspire.

My priorities
  1. Concentration on investment in core infrastructure and improving climate change resilience.
  2. Improvement in footpaths, cycleways to spur active transport and freeing up road space for electric vehicles and freight.
  3. Progress on Riverlink, with its vital floodway, transport and inner city living advances.
